Over three decades,

Srishti Trust has empowered,

educated and employed

190+ children and young adults with disabilities in Munnar, Kerala.

Where It All Began

In the 1980’s, the Tata Tea management uncovered a heart-breaking reality within their plantations in Munnar, Kerala: many children in the community were born with disabilities, a consequence of generational intermarriage.

With no access to specialised education, these children were often kept indoors, isolated from the world, while their parents laboured in the fields.

In 1991, we established a school that became a safe and nurturing place for these children to learn and grow.

Initially guided by experts from the REACH School in Kolkata, our teachers were trained to provide education tailored to each child’s unique needs.

Empowerment And Other Institutes

As the children turned into adults, the DARE School management realised that although the school had succeeded in educating and empowering these youth, they needed employment and financial security. A vocational training centre was setup for DARE School graduates, producing office stationery such as registers, files, envelopes and bill books. This initiative became the first step in a journey that eventually led to the creation of Athulya Paper Studio. A later trip to Dhaka by Mrs. Ratna Krishnakumar sparked the idea for naturally-dyed textiles, and in 1994, Aranya Natural was born. Munnar’s fresh spring water made the colours come alive, opening new opportunities for dignified livelihoods amongst the DARE graduates

Discover Munnar

Munnar, nestled in Kerala’s Western Ghats, is famed for its vast tea plantations, mist-kissed hills and lush greenery. Decades ago, many families migrated to these serene highlands to work at the Tata Tea plantations, weaving their lives into the very fabric of the landscape. Today, it is a tranquil blend of natural beauty and heritage, where endless shades of green meet the soft whispers of mountain breezes.
