Shakti

A stitching unit empowering women from the plantation community to earn a better livelihood.

Our Journey

In 1994, Mrs. Ratna Krishnakumar took over a small, struggling co-op set up for wives of the plantation staff to earn a better living.

She transformed it into Shakti, and had these women stitch sprayer coats for the plantation workers.

As the unit grew, they were commissioned to make laundry bags for the Taj Group of Hotels.

Today, Shakti is a self-sufficient unit, producing 10,000 laundry bags for the Taj every year.

The Women of Shakti

Shakti currently employs eight women from the plantation community.

Some are widows, others were struggling to make sustainable livelihoods.

Today the unit thrives, they make laundry bags for Taj, raincoats and sprayer coats for KDHP Tea plantations and bed sheets and curtains for High Range Hospital.

The true Shakti of our women lies in their courage to turn hardship into hope and labour into livelihoods.
